The 5 Best Fitness Apps

The 5 Best Fitness Apps

These are the essential health and fitness apps you need to have on your smartphone.

If your New Years’ resolution was to get fit, lose weight or build strength in 2019, then these apps can help you stay on track beyond January and achieve your goals for the year.

My Fitness Pal

App Store Rating: 4.7

Cost: Free (Premium available)

Often hailed as the number one food tracking app, My Fitness Pal is great for counting calories and nutrient data. With over 85 million users it has built one of the biggest databases of foods, making it easy to scan, search and log your meals. When signing up, you input your stats (age, gender, height, weight and activity level) and MFP calculates your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). If you set it to lose or gain weight, it calculates how many calories you need to eat every day to achieve your goals. Although a premium option is available, you have access to all the necessary features for free.

Sweat with Kayla

App Store Rating: 4.1

Cost: £14.99/month

Based off Kayla Itsines’ best-selling workout eBook ("Bikini Body Guide"), the Sweat app plans your weekly workouts and helps you track your progress. The BBG phenomenon centres around 28-minute HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) workouts and 40 LISS (Low-Intensity Steady State) cardio, helping you become fitter and stronger either through at-home workouts or in the gym. Through the app, you get access to several different programmes on top of the classic BBG, including yoga flows and PWR - a new weightlifting programme. This one does have a cost attached to it, with a monthly subscription of £14.99 after a 1-week free trial.

You gradually build up your stamina throughout the 8 weeks with the goal of a full 5km run at the end! The official C25K 5K Trainer app is free to download but offers in-app-purchases to upgrade.
