Guest Blog: Don't quit! How to not give up on your new year goals
We’ve all heard it before: ‘New year, new me!’. We make all these goals and we get up early, exercise, eat healthy, but then at some point down the line we suddenly stop. Why is that?
Did you know that the most common new year’s resolutions are to lose weight, exercise and eat more healthily? This is totally achievable however thousands of us seem to give up within just a week or 2. This is because the way we approach this goal is not realistic which can lead to many of us burning out and feeling exhausted. Let’s face it; you are not going to get up at 5am, do a HIIT workout and drink a green smoothie every single day. But you can still reach your goals by getting into a balanced, healthy routine. Our friends at Auro have provided us with 5 tips for how to stick with and achieve your 2021 resolutions.
Whether this involves buying new gym equipment, putting on new gym wear or purchasing a fitness app; by investing in yourself you’ll be able to get on track faster than ever. Putting the time and energy into the path that leads to your goal will help you stick to it and achieve it. Consider testing out a few different things and find what works best for you.
Exercising shouldn’t feel like a chore or punishment. The more we move our bodies, the more endorphins we release which has a positive impact on our mood. By making small changes you can create healthy lifestyle habits which can have a huge impact on your mindset and body.
Save time and run or cycle to work, take the stairs instead of the lift. Go for a brisk walk on your lunch break. You don’t have to get to the gym to stay fit. Auro has plenty of guided runs, walks and even meditations that you can use on your commute to or from work from work.
If you lack the motivation, or just don’t know how to get started, then a training plan could be just the thing for you. Research suggests that you are two times as likely to reach your goals if you train with a structured plan. Knowing exactly what workout you are going to do each day takes away the effort of researching and deciding what you want to do. Trainers can keep you going by reminding you to exercise and motivating you through good music, encouragement and support.
Some days we work out and eat a salad, and some days we stay in our pyjamas and eat cake. It’s called the beauty of balance. At the end of the day we should never deny ourselves of enjoying something. If you decide that one day you don’t want to work out and you want to eat whatever you want, go ahead and ENJOY it! Consistency is key and if you put too many restrictions in place you will burn out and give up. Just remember to carry on with your plan and keep moving forward.
And remember it's important to strengthen your mental health too! Yoga, meditation, pilates and stretching classes can help with your wellness as well as your fitness. So those days when you're feeling a little flat, try picking yourself up with some low-intensity classes to help your mind relax and de-stress.
This journey doesn’t need to be one you embark on alone. There are plenty of online communities where you can share your journey. and meet other people just like you! Community groups are great if you want to join a group to share your efforts with other people who are on their own fitness journey. There are so many people out there experiencing the same emotions as you so it is important to stick together!
